What is Aikido?
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art with roots
extending deep into the philosophy and history of Japan. The fundamental
principle of Aikido is to harmonize with the strengths about us in order
to protect ourselves and to control these forces without coming into
direct opposition.
If we attempt to place strength against strength, then brute strength
is the sole deciding factor. However, if we use our strength wisely with
proper timing, this leverage allows us to control much larger forces
than are otherwise possible. These traits make Aikido particularly well
suited for men and women of all ages.
In addition to all of the health benefits of regular exercise that Aikido
provides, the art of Aikido develops our physical coordination, and sense
of awareness and timing, while at the same time developing techniques
that can be used for effective self defense. Aikido relies on controlling
the attacker rather than striking, which is common in other martial arts.
It is based on natural motions of the body and is an aid in developing
both a calm mind and relaxed body.
Aikido's emphasis on harmonizing and natural motion make it applicable
to all aspects of our daily lives. Because of this, the few hours one
might train each week can have a dramatic effect on one's life as a whole.
